Q. What does this project entail?
A.
Installation of new steam tunnel segments and replacement of existing buried
steam lines throughout campus. Two years of construction, large
areas of campus fenced off, heavy equipment traffic, dust, noise, and
difficulty navigating around the construction zones.
Q. When does
it start?
A. Phase 1,
April to October 2007
Phase 2, April to October 2008
Q. Whre are
the constructions zones located at?
A.
2007: North end of campus, Eddy and Maurice Streets. (Map)
2008: East and south side of campus, still in planning stage (Map)
Q. What
is the scope of the project?
A. This
project consists of installing new steam tunnel segments to replace direct
buried lines and to “loop” the piping together to improve the reliability of
steam service to buildings. The tunnels house the steam piping used to heat
buildings on campus. Virtually all of the buildings are heated with steam, and
much of that pipe is currently buried directly in the ground, which can cause
corrosion. It is our goal to reduce the impact of the project on the day-to-day
operation of campus as much as possible. This will be difficult as the project
will consist of large construction zones that will disrupt both vehicular and
pedestrian traffic, as well as access to buildings. Information on our website
and at the construction sites will assist people in planning their activities
around the construction zone with accessible alternate routes.
Q. How will I know which pedestrian paths are blocked?
A. They will be clearly marked with directions to nearest buildings. Maps will
be posted at each route to assist you in alternate route selection.
Q. I’m a student with a disability and have a classes in Gallagher and
Education, how will I get between classes?
A. In addition to the above noted directions on the construction fences, there
will be updated maps on the DSS website
Q. I usually park in the area soon to be inside
the construction zone, what should I do?
A. The Department of Public Safety will be offering options for displaced
reserved and handicapped parking. Their suggestions and solutions will be on
Facility Service & Public Safety’s websites.
Q. What streets will be closed?
A. Maurice and Eddy Streets. See website for traffic plan.
Q. What about all the trees affected by the construction?
A. We have worked with the arboeteum committee to allow the project to proceed
with the removal of many trees, but also to take additional measures to protect
valuable trees. New trees will be planted as part of this project.
